International Transport of Large Mobile Drill Rigs
Due to the complex nature of these goods, Powerhouse International determined that the best sea transport solution was RORO. Roll On – Roll Off vessels are cargo ships designed to transport wheeled cargo. It was essential to identify a solution which complies with International transport regulations and aligns with stakeholder expectations.

Transport via RoRo Vessel and Low Bed Trailers:
A mobile crane was required to load the drill rigs onto specialised low bed trailers for transport to the Roll On – Roll Off (RORO) vessel terminal at Fishermans Island.
Due to the oversized cargo dimensions, the goods could only travel on the road during certain hours with pilots and escorts required.
When the rigs arrived at the destination port of Southampton, our UK partners arranged the Customs clearance and delivery to site on specialised low bed trailers. Each rig had an array of jibs and drilling pipes which were loaded and secured on 10 x 40 ft flat racks, with two of the containers being over-dimensional.
Powerhouse International booked all the containerised cargo on another vessel which arrived in Southampton one week after the rigs. Our UK partners again arranged the Customs clearance and delivery to the site where the containers were unpacked and the relevant items allocated to each Drill Rig.
The project took around 12 weeks to complete from door to door, the goods arrived on schedule and without any discrepancies and the client was extremely pleased and continued to use our services.
